A word recurs within this verse — often emphatic in Hebrew:

  • לַיהוָ֗ה LORD H3068 ×2

Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 38 words from the Hebrew and 43 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 21 Hebrew tokens and 35 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Be not stiff-necked, as your fathers were — A metaphorical expression, taken from refractory oxen, which will not go forward, but endeavour to withdraw their necks and shoulders from the yoke, and go backward. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(8) Be ye not stiffnecked.—Harden ye not your neck like your fathers. 2Ki_17:14, “and they hardened their neck like their fathers’ neck.” (Jer_7:26; Psa_95:8-9.)

But yield yourselves.—Omit but, and place a stop after fathers. “Yield ye a hand to Jehovah,” i.e., submit to Him. So 1Ch_29:24. The phrase also means “to make an agreement with” (Ezr_10:19; 2Ki_10:15). (Comp. Isa_2:6.)

Enter into his sanctuary . . . serve the Lord.—Comp. Psa_100:1; Psa_100:4.

Which he hath sanctified for over.—2Ch_7:16; 2Ch_7:20.

That the fierceness (heat) . . . from you.—2Ch_29:10. Such resemblances prove the ideal character of these addresses.

John Gill's Exposition

For if ye turn again unto the Lord,.... To the fear or worship of the Lord, as the Targum:

your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land; who had been carried away by Tiglathpileser, see Psa 106:46,

for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful; so he had proclaimed his name, as they must know, Exo 34:6,

and will not turn away his face from you; in wrath and anger; or withdraw his Shecaniah from you, as the Targum; his gracious and glorious presence:

if ye return unto him; his fear and worship, as the same paraphrase.

The Pulpit Commentary

Be ye not stiff-necked. (see De 16, 17) Yield yourselves; literally, give the hand (see 1Ch_29:24; Ezr_10:19, etc.) Which he hath sanctified for ever. (see Ezr_7:9. "The hand of God" here means rather his effectual working, which effectual working produced a hearty unanimity, that contrasted well with the bearing of the northern tribes.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 21 words (20 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is qâshâh (“to be hard”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “to be hard” (qâshâh) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Genesis 35:16, which shares the word «to be hard», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “LORD” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  5. «תַּקְשׁ֥וּ» is a Hiphil Jussive verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Joseph Benson's Commentary read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
