Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 44 words from the Hebrew and 52 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 24 Hebrew tokens and 45 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 6:27 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(27) Then hear thou from heaven.—Rather, (to) heaven or (in) heaven, as in Kings. (Comp. Note on 2Ch_6:23.) The versions read “from heaven.”

When thou . . . way.—For thou pointest them to the good way. A construction only found here. Comp. Psa_27:11, where we see the simple accusation as in Kings, which is probably right here also, ’el (to) being an error for ’eth (so the versions). Making this change, the verse coincides with 1Ki_8:36.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

for You will teach them the good way as You did when there was a famine in David’s time for three years (II Sam. 21:1), and You taught them and said to them, “(It is) for Saul and (also) for his bloody house.” Likewise, so shall You teach them which sin causes them [their distress], for what reason the heaven was shut up.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “rain” (mâṭar) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Exodus 9:33, which shares the word «rain», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “people” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «תִּשְׁמַ֣ע» is a Qal Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Joseph Benson's Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
