Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 42 words from the Hebrew and 51 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 21 Hebrew tokens and 39 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 35:7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these [were] of the king’s substance.

Ver. 7. Of the flock, lambs and kids.] Either of these might by the law be offered, {Exo 12:5} but use and custom made it most frequent to furnish the paschal supper rather with a lamb than with a kid: and accordingly did our Saviour celebrate the passover.

And three thousand bullocks.] These were rather a part of the solemnity of the feast of unleavened bread, which lasted seven days together, than precisely of the paschal supper.

These were of the king’s substance.] See 2Ch 30:24.

35:7-9 The Passover sacrifice required lambs and young goats (Exod 12:21). The cattle were an additional offering. The totals Josiah provided along with the contributions of others were nearly double the offerings in Hezekiah’s time (see 2 Chr 30:24), yet less than the offerings at the dedication of the Temple (see 7:5).

And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings,.... Which be either lambs or kids of the goats, Exo 12:5, for all that were present, to the number of 30,000; that is, 30,000 lambs or kids, which would serve 30,000 families:

and three thousand bullocks; these were for the "chagigah" or feast, kept on the day following the passover:

these were of the king's substance; taken out of his flocks and herds, or bought with his money, and liberally given to the people, to such poor families as could not afford well to be at the expense of such a festival.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 21 words (18 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is rᵉkûwsh (“property”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “property” (rᵉkûwsh) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Genesis 12:5, which shares the word «property», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “son” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וַיָּ֣רֶם» is a Hiphil Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Tyndale Open Study Notes read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
