Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(10) Thou shalt surely give.—“Even a hundred times.”

Him.—“Between thee and him alone.” (Comp. “Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth” in Mat_6:3). I have thought it worth while to borrow the comments of Rashi on these verses (Deu_15:7-10) almost entire, to show how well the Jews have understood the true principles of Christian charity from the law of Moses. That people has always been remarkable for kindness to its own poor.

For this thing.—Literally, this word, or this promise. And Rashi observes, “Even when thou hast promised to give, thou wilt receive the reward of the promise as well as the reward of the deed;” and we may compare St. Paul. “If there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.” (2Co_8:12.)

John Gill's Exposition

Thou shall surely give him,.... Or lend to him; though lending in such a case and circumstances, that person being extremely poor, and the year of release at hand, is the same as giving. Jarchi remarks that money must be given him, even a hundred times if he asks it; but the limitation is to what he wants, and what is sufficient for his present wants, Deu 15:8.

and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him; grieved at parting with his money he has little or no hope of seeing again, grudging it to him to whom it is given; when, on the other hand, it should he given freely and cheerfully, for God loves a cheerful giver:

because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all thou puttest thine hand unto; that is, for lending or giving largely, liberally, and cheerfully, to persons in distress; see Pro 11:24.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

Thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him, i.e. thou shalt give not only with an open hand, but with a willing and cheerful mind and heart, Rom 12:8; 2Co 9:9, without which thy very charity is uncharitable, and not accepted by God, who requires the heart in all his services.

In all that thou puttest thine hand unto, i.e. in all thy works, as before, for the hand is the great instrument of action.

The Pulpit Commentary

Shall not be grieved; literally, shall not become evil, i.e. shall not entertain a grudge. They were to give, not grudgingly or of necessity, merely through dread of God"s displeasure, but cheerfully and spontaneously. (of 2Co_9:7) For this God would bless them in all their works, so that they should not only be no losers, but should be gainers, by their generosity.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

נתן תתן לו THOU SHALT SURELY GIVE HIM — even hundred times (Sifrei Devarim 117:6).

לו implies between him and you (privately) (Sifrei Devarim 117:7.)

כי בגלל הדבר הזה BECAUSE THAT FOR THIS THING [THE LORD THY GOD SHALL BLESS THEE] — (the word is taken in its literal sense of “word”, for it would have sufficed to state כי בגלל זה suggesting): even if you only say (intend) to give but are later unable to do so you will receive a reward for the mere saying (intention) together with the reward for the action (Sifrei Devarim 117:8).

Deuteronomy, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 20 words (15 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is gâlâl (“on account of”). The Greek Septuagint runs longer here. A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word gâlâl carries the sense “on account of.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. Genesis 12:13 shares the word «on account of» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “to give” occurs 3× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. Compared with the Hebrew, the Septuagint runs longer here. What questions does that raise?
  5. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  6. The verb «נָת֤וֹן» is Qal Infinitive Absolute. How does its form color the action?
  7. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
