Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 37 words from the Hebrew and 29 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 15 Hebrew tokens and 16 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Kings 8:27 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ki 8:27 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as [did] the house of Ahab: for he [was] the son in law of the house of Ahab.

Ver. 27. For he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.] His father was so, and himself might be so too by his mother Athaliah’s persuasion. Thus idolatry came to be so deeply rooted and riveted in that family, that it could not be rooted out but by rooting up the corrupted stock, as one hath it.

John Gill's Exposition

From Ramoth, having taken it, and left his army there:

to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at Ramah; the same with Ramothgilead:

when he fought against Hazael king of Syria; for Benhadad being dead, he was now king in his room, Kg2 8:15.

and Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick; of the wounds which he had received, which might occasion a feverish disorder; and so it was brought about in Providence that Ahaziah should here meet with the destruction appointed for him, of which in the following chapter. Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

27. He walked in the way of the house of Ahab — “For,” says 2Ch_22:3, “his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly.” The same wicked woman led both his father and himself into ruin.

He was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab — He, like his father, had married a wife of the daughters of Omri, so that he “was connected with the house of Ahab by a double tie — of mother and wife.” — Wordsworth.

The Pulpit Commentary

And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab. Compare what is said of Ahaziah of Israel in 1Ki_22:52, 1Ki_22:53, and of Jehoram of Judah in the present chapter (ver. 18). What is specially intended is that Ahaziah kept up the Baal-worship introduced by his father into Judah. And did evil in the sight of the Lord, as did the house of Ahab: for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab; literally, for he was related by marriage to the house of Ahab. tj is any relation by marriage, not "son-in-law" in particular. (see Exo_3:1, and the comment on the place)

2 Kings, in the Historical, opens this verse with 15 words (11 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is châthân (“son-in-law”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “son-in-law” (châthân) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does Genesis 19:12, which shares the word «son-in-law», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “house” (3× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
