Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 24 words from the Hebrew and 19 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 10 Hebrew tokens and 15 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Ezekiel 23:30 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Eze 23:30 I will do these [things] unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, [and] because thou art polluted with their idols.

Ver. 30. Thou art polluted with their idols.] Whereby thou thoughtest to have purged away thy sins, as Papists also do; but it proveth otherwise.

John Trapp, A Commentary or Exposition upon All the Books of the Old and New Testament (1647–1656) — public domain. Text from a community e-Sword module.

John Gill's Exposition

And I will do these things unto thee,.... What the Chaldeans did God is said to do, because he suffered them to do these things, as a punishment for their sins; yea, it was according to his will, and by his orders. The Septuagint and Vulgate Latin versions render it, "they have done these things unto thee"; that is, the Chaldeans. The Targum is,

"thy sins are the cause of these things unto thee;''

that is, their idolatry and other iniquities. Hence the Syriac version is very particular,

"for thy whoredoms these things shall be done unto thee;''

and the Arabic version,

"thy whoredom hath done (or is the cause of) these things unto thee,''

as follows:

because thou hast gone a whoring after the Heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols; imitated them in their idolatries; worshipped the same dunghill gods as they did, as the word signifies; with which it was no wonder they should be polluted, and become abominable unto God.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

This verse gives the same reason which hath been often given, why the Lord proceeds in this severity, because, as an obstinate, lewd, untractable adulteress abuseth the best husband, till none can forbear, so had the Jews dealt with God, and God will deal with them.

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

30. I will do these things unto thee — The Septuagint places a period after “discovered” (Eze_23:29), and reads, “Thy lewdness and thy whoredoms have done this unto thee.” (Compare Jer_4:18.) In many places in this prophecy Jehovah considers as his own actions the deeds which he permits even bad men to perform. He makes even the wrath of men to praise him. Unknowingly and unwillingly the Assyrians and Egyptians become his agents in punishing and purifying his disobedient people (note Eze_20:25).

General Information:

Yahweh continues his metaphor in which he speaks of the cities of Jerusalem and Samaria as if they were two prostitutes. This metaphor continues through Ezekiel 23:34. (See: Metaphor)

These things will be done to you in your acting

"These things will be done to you because you have acted." This can be stated in active form. AT: "These things will happen to you because you have acted" (See: Active or Passive)

acting like a prostitute, lusting after nations

Ezekiel speaks of Oholibah, who represents Judah (Ezekiel 23:4), as if she were a prostitute sleeping with the men of many nations for money. He wants the people of Judah to understand that Yahweh to punish them because they were worshiping the idols of other nations so they could get those nations' wealth and power. AT: "acting like a prostitute, lusting after men of other nations" (See: Metonymy)

became unclean with their idols

She became unclean by worshiping the idols. AT: "became unclean by worshiping their idols" (See: Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information)

unclean

A person who God considers spiritually unacceptable or defiled is spoken of as if the person were physically unclean. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 23:7. (See: Metaphor)

so I will put her cup of punishment into your hand

This refers to Oholibah's punishment that she will receive as if it were a cup of wine. AT: "so I will cause you to be punished in the same way as your sister" (See: Metaphor)

Ezekiel, in the Prophets, opens this verse with 10 words (9 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is gillûwl (“idols”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “idols” (gillûwl) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Leviticus 26:30, which shares the word «idols», read alongside this verse?
  3. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  4. «עָשֹׂ֥ה» is a Qal Infinitive Absolute verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  5. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and John Gill's Exposition read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
