Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 40 words from the Hebrew and 36 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 19 Hebrew tokens and 31 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Eze 38:22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that [are] with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.

Ver. 22. An overflowing rain, and great hailstones.] As once at the general deluge, destruction of Sodom, discomfiture of the kings of Canaan in Joshua’s days. {Jos 10:11} Some think that these judgments here threatened shall, towards the end of the world, be executed upon antichrist and his adherents according to the letter. See Rev 16:21. {See Trapp on "Rev 16:21"}

plead--a forensic term; because God in His inflictions acts on the principles of His own immutable justice, not by arbitrary impulse (Isa 66:16; Jer 25:31).

blood . . . hailstones, fire-- (Rev 8:7; Rev 16:21). The imagery is taken from the destruction of Sodom and the plagues of Egypt (compare Psa 11:6). Antiochus died by "pestilence" (2 Maccabees 9:5).

Verse 22. Great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.] These are probably figurative expressions, to signify that the whole tide of the war should be against him, and that his defeat and slaughter should be great. Abp. Newcome supposes all the above prophecy remains yet to be fulfilled. Where such eminent scribes are divided, who shall decide!

Thus will l magnify myself, and sanctify myself,.... Show the greatness of his power, and the strictness of his justice and holiness, and glorify these, and all other of his perfections, in the destruction of the enemies of his people:

and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord; Heathen nations shall now come to the knowledge of the true God, and his Son Jesus Christ, and of the Christian religion, and shall embrace and profess it; See Gill on Eze 38:16, the kingdoms of the world will now become the Lord's, Rev 11:15.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

I will plead, as judge and avenger, and in most dreadful manner, whether you take the words figuratively or literally. I slew others, Sennacherib’s army, by pestilence, probably this was the angel’s sword; others, as Ammon, Moab, Mount Seir, with blood by their own swords; the Amorites with hailstones, Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone, the old world with an overflowing flood. Each single was dreadful, but all meet in the destruction of Gog to make it most terrible. Whether these things are enigmatical or literal, I will not determine, but I am sure they tell us how great the final ruin of the enemies of God and his church shall be.

The Pulpit Commentary

Vers. 22, 23Pestilence and blood (comp. Eze_5:17 Eze_14:19 Eze_28:23) an overflowing rain and great hailstones literally, stones of ice. (comp. Eze_13:11, Eze_13:13) fire, and brimstone, or, pitch. (comp. Gen_19:24) The imagery here brought together was probably borrowed from the accounts given in the Pentateuch of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, (Gen_19:24) of the plagues in Egypt (Exodus 7-10), and of the extermination of the Canaanites. (Jos_10:11) The result of the whole would be to impress the minds of many nations with the conviction that Israel"s God was both great and powerful, that, in fact, he was God alone.

Ezekiel, in the Prophets, opens this verse with 19 words (16 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʼelgâbîysh (“hail”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “hail” (ʼelgâbîysh) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. Ezekiel 13:11 shares the word «hail» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “upon” occurs 3× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֥י» is Niphal Sequential Perfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Jamieson, Fausset & Brown read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
