Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 44 words from the Hebrew and 40 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 20 Hebrew tokens and 32 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on Deuteronomy 5:31 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). 31. Moses is commanded to stand by God in order to receive other laws (than the Ten Words) to teach the people subsequently.

all the commandment] or charge; Heb. miṣwah. ‘ “The (or this) commandment “recurs Deu_6:1, Deu_7:11, Deu_30:11; with “all,” Deu_6:25, Deu_8:1, Deu_9:8; Deu_9:22, Deu_15:5, Deu_19:9, Deu_27:1 (of a special injunction), Deu_31:5. As Deu_11:22, Deu_19:9 show, it denotes the deuteronomic legislation generally (esp. on its moral and religious side) viewed as the expression of a single principle, the fundamental duty of Deu_6:5’ (Driver); yet it is also possible to interpret it here, as in Deu_11:22, Deu_19:9, of the principles underlying the laws and expounded in this discourse. See below on Deu_6:1.

the statutes, and the judgements] With Sam. omit the preceding and. The statutes and judgements (the usual deuteronomic phrase) are thus the contents or detailed applications o (the miṣwah, the separate laws to be subsequently given in Moab on the eve of the people’s entrance to the promised land (as the rest of the verse declares), and which are contained in chs. 12–26.

With the addition to possess it as here, Deu_3:18 (hath given), Pl.; Deu_9:6, Deu_12:1, Deu_17:14 (shalt possess), Deu_19:14, all Sg. (except perhaps Deu_12:1, which is doubtful). With the addition for an inheritance, Deu_4:21, Deu_15:4 (+ to possess it), Deu_19:10, Deu_24:4, Deu_25:19, Deu_26:1, all Sg. Cp. Deu_12:10 causeth you, Deu_19:3 causeth thee, to inherit.

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

31. The statutes, and the judgments — These are the commands recorded in Exodus 21, 22. Note on Deu_5:6-21. The variations between the commandments as given in this passage and in Exo_20:1-17, are in the forth, fifth, and tenth. For the sake of comparison we place these commandments side by side:

Exo_20:8-11.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Loud thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant: nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Deu_5:12-15. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.Exo_20:12. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.Deu_5:16. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Exo_20:17. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Deu_5:21. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Ewald’s view is that the ten words were originally each in the same terse form in which the first, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth appear both in Exodus and Deuteronomy. See Speaker’s Commentary on Exodus 20.

Deuteronomy, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 20 words (18 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʻimmâd (“with”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “with” (ʻimmâd) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. Genesis 3:12 shares the word «with» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “which” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently. What is at stake in choosing one wording over another?
  5. The verb «עֲמֹ֣ד» is Qal Imperative. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges and Whedon's Commentary on the Bible read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
