Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 30 words from the Hebrew and 31 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 15 Hebrew tokens and 25 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Be strong and courageous,.... Be of good heart and spirit, and quit yourselves like men:

be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; which was very large; for no less than 185,000 were slain of them by an angel in one night, Kg2 19:35.

for there be more with us than with him; though not in number, yet in power and might; and if angels are meant, they are more in number; but it seems, by what follows, that Hezekiah had only the Lord his God in his thoughts and view.

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The street of the gate ... - Or, “the square at the gate” (compare 2Ch 29:4 note). The gate intended is probably that of Ephraim 2Ch 25:23 - the great northern gate, opposite the “Camp of the Assyrians “ - represented by the modern Damascus gate.

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

6. The street of the gate of the city — This is indefinite, but may most naturally be understood of a broad open space in front of the principal gate of the city, perhaps the northern gate, or “gate of Ephraim.” 2Ki_14:13; Neh_8:16.

Spake comfortably — Encouragingly. Compare chap. 2Ch_30:22, note. Hezekiah’s words of faith and encouragement, as here given, do not well accord with his submission and payment of treasure to the invader, as recorded in 2Ki_18:14-16. But the records are by no means contradictory. Together they furnish a lesson of human weakness. The people for awhile were encouraged by Hezekiah’s words, (2Ch_32:8,) but when Sennacherib had captured “all the fenced cities of Judah,” (2Ki_18:13,) they probably became disheartened, and Hezekiah himself trembled for the safety of his capital, and was glad to hire the invader to depart.

2Ch_32:9-23 are a brief summary of the events of Sennacherib’s second invasion. This is much more fully detailed in 2Ki_18:17-19; 2Ki_18:37, where see notes. The rest of the chapter (2Ch_32:24-33) is also an abbreviation of what is more fully recorded in 2 Kings 20.

The Pulpit Commentary

The street of the gate; translate, the wide area at the gate, etc.; what gate is not specified, but presumably either "the gate of Ephraim," which would be the one opposed to the camp of the besiegers, or possibly "the comer gate". (2Ch_25:23; and Courier"s "Handbook," pp. 343-345)

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 15 words (13 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is rᵉchôb (“plaza”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word rᵉchôb carries the sense “plaza.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. How does Genesis 19:2, which shares the word «plaza», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “upon” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וַיִּתֵּ֛ן» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
