Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

2

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Leviticus 7:31 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Lev 7:31 And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar: but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.

Ver. 31,32. The breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. And the right shoulder.] To note that men must give their breasts and shoulders, affections and actions, even their whole selves; first to the Lord, and then to us ministers by the will of God, as those famous Macedonians did in 2Co 8:5; that so they may be sani in doctrina et sancti in vita, sound in doctrine, and holy in life.

John Gill's Exposition

And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave offering,.... Whether of an ox or a cow, a lamb or a goat:

of the sacrifices of your peace offerings; which were of either of these creatures; the Targum of Jonathan paraphrases it,"the right arm from the shoulder to the elbow.''The breast being the seat of wisdom, and the shoulder of strength, some think denote Christ as the wisdom and power of God unto his people, his priests, who have all their knowledge and strength from him, and who bears them on his heart and on his shoulder.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

והקטיר הכהן את החלב AND THE PRIEST SHALL CAUSE THE FAT TO ASCEND IN FUMES [AT THE ALTAR] and only afterwards, והיה החזה לאהרן SHALL THE BREAST BE AARON’S [AND HIS SONS] — This teaches us that the flesh of the sacrifices may not be eaten so long as the fat portions are below the altar (have not yet been placed upon it and burnt) (Sifra, Tzav, Chapter 16 4; Pesachim 59b).

Lesson kit

Leviticus, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 9 words (9 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is châzeh (“breast”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word châzeh carries the sense “breast.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. How does Exodus 29:26, which shares the word «breast», read alongside this verse?
  3. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  4. «וְהִקְטִ֧יר» is a Hiphil Sequential Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  5. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and John Gill's Exposition read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
