Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 22 words from the Hebrew and 23 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 14 Hebrew tokens and 21 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Joseph Benson's Commentary

2Ch 9:23. All the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon — All in those parts of the world. To hear his wisdom — Either his knowledge of the works of God in creation and providence, or his skill in physic, or his state-policy, or his rules of prudence for the conduct of human life, or perhaps the principles of his religion, and the evidences of it. That God put in his heart — Which was God’s supernatural gift to him, in answer to his prayer. The application which they then made, with such eagerness, to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, will aggravate, shame, and condemn men’s general contempt of Christ and his gospel, in which are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; but which none of the princes of this world desire to know, for they are foolishness to them, 1Co 2:8; 1Co 2:14.

  2. James 1:5 shares this passage’s theme. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
