Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 31 words from the Hebrew and 33 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 15 Hebrew tokens and 25 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

2

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Numbers 14:29 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

John Gill's Exposition

Doubtless ye shall not come into the land,.... The land of Canaan; or "if ye shall come" (a); that is, I swear ye shall not, so the Targum of Jonathan:

concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein; not them personally, but the people and nation of which they were, and to which they belonged, the seed and posterity of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to whom the oath was made:

save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun; who brought a good report of the land. Caleb is mentioned first, as Aben Ezra thinks, because he first appeased and quieted the people; but in Num 14:38 Joshua stands first, so that nothing is to be inferred from hence; these were the only two of the spies that went into the land of Canaan, Num 13:4; and the only two of the Israelites that were numbered, from twenty years old and upwards, Num 14:29; those of the tribe of Levi, not being in that account, must be remembered to be excepted also.

Ver. 29. Your carcasses shall fall.] Cadaver a cadendo; πρωμα παρα το πιπτειν. Who knows whether God purpose not to wear out this generation, that hath been defiled with the superstitions of the land we live in, that we may not see the good that he will bring upon this Church!

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(29) From twenty years old and upward.—Rashi thinks that these words were employed to show that the Levites who were numbered from a month old and upwards were not included in the general sentence of destruction, and hence that it is no just cause of astonishment that some of them, as, e.g., Eleazar, should have entered the land of Canaan.

gen. ed. J. J. S. Perowne

29. all that were numbered] in the census (ch. 1). The Levites, however, were not included in that census (Num_1:47), and the priestly writer probably assumed that the sentence of death in the wilderness did not apply to them. Aaron’s son Eleazar succeeded his father as high priest on the borders of Canaan, and he must certainly have been over 20 years of age at this time, since he acted in a responsible position as priest before the departure from Sinai (see Num_3:3 f., 32, Num_4:16).

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

29. Your carcasses — By the use of this word, which, especially in modern usage, conveys contempt or ridicule, the English translation does injustice to Jehovah’s solemn oath of exclusion from Canaan. The original signifies simply corpses or dead bodies. See Gen_15:11.

All that were numbered — 603,550. See Num_1:46. Caleb and Joshua only were excepted. Since the women were not numbered, they are not excluded. The tribe of Levi was not included in the general census. From this fact, and from the mention of Eleazar in Jos_14:1; Jos_24:33, we conclude that this tribe was not excluded.

The Pulpit Commentary

All that were numbered of you... from twenty years old. (cf. Num_1:18, Num_1:19, Num_1:47) All that had been enrolled as the soldiers of the Lord, to fight his battles and their own, but had refused, and had incurred the guilt of mutiny.

Numbers, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 15 words (14 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is peger (“corpse”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word peger carries the sense “corpse.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. Genesis 15:11 shares the word «corpse» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “all” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «יִפְּל֨וּ» is Qal Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how John Gill's Exposition and Trapp's Complete Commentary read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
