Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 56 words from the Hebrew and 65 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 32 Hebrew tokens and 52 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Joseph Benson's Commentary

2Ch 6:33. May know that this house is called by thy name — That it is truly the house of the Almighty Jehovah. Solomon knew that the goodness of God was so immense, that the extending it, how much soever, toward other people, neither would nor could lessen the exercise of it toward Israel.

People.—The peoples.

And fear thee.—Better without and; as in Kings, “that they may fear thee.” So Syriac.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

and You shall do whatever the stranger calls upon You Concerning an Israelite, I pray to give him according to his ways, but concerning a heathen, according to all the stranger calls upon You, because Israelites recognize the Holy One, blessed be He, and they know that He has the ability to do, and if his prayer is not heard, he assigns the cause to himself, to his sins, and he searches his deeds, but the heathen will complain of injustice and say, “I heard His fame throughout the world, and I toiled on many roads until I came and prayed in this place, and I did not find reality in Him any more than the other deities.” Therefore, You shall do whatever the stranger calls upon You.

  2. Exodus 15:17 shares the word «foundation» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “all” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «תִּשְׁמַ֤ע» is Qal Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Joseph Benson's Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
