Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 33 words from the Hebrew and 33 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — the same length.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 14 Hebrew tokens and 25 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Judges 6:9 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

9. that oppressed you] See on Jdg_2:18; and drave them out cf. Exo_34:11 JE, Jos_24:18 E. Jdg_6:8-9 are repeated in 1Sa_10:18, possibly copied from here.

The aim of Jdg_6:7-10 is to enforce the principle that reformation must precede deliverance. But the prophet has hardly reached this point when his speech is abruptly broken off, and one of the main narratives begins (11–24). These verses must be earlier than the Dtc. compiler, who would not have curtailed the speech had he inserted it himself. They seem to be the handiwork of the Elohistic school; thus because of in Jdg_6:7 (an uncommon expression in Hebr.), cf. Gen_21:11; Gen_21:25, Num_12:1 etc. E; brought you up from Egypt Jdg_6:8, cf. John Gill's Exposition

And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God, The covenant God of them and their fathers, and they ought not to have owned and acknowledged any other besides him:

fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; meaning not a fear of being hurt by them, but such a fear and reverence of them as to worship them, which was only to be given to the Lord. The Amorites are here put for all the Canaanites, they being a principal people among them:

but ye have not obeyed my voice; to cleave to him, fear and worship him; they had been guilty of idolatry, and this is the sin the prophet was sent to reprove them for, and bring them to a sense of.

Judges, in the Historical, opens this verse with 14 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is lâchats (“to oppress”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “to oppress” (lâchats) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does Exodus 3:9, which shares the word «to oppress», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “hand” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וָאַצִּ֤ל» is a Hiphil Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges and Trapp's Complete Commentary read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
