Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 41 words from the Hebrew and 41 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — the same length.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(22) Received the blood.—Caught it in bowls of sprinkling (Num_8:14).

And sprinkled it on the altar.—Threw it against (literally, towards) the altar (Lev_8:19; Lev_8:24).

Likewise, when.—And they slaughtered the rams . . . and they slaughtered the lambs. The three clauses of the verse are symmetrical. The repetition is a mark of the writer’s anxiety to show how carefully the legitimate ritual was observed in each instance.

Killed.—Slaughtered (shahat; σφάζω, Gen_37:31). Specially used of slaying sacrificial victims (Lev_1:5).

for the king commanded that the burnt offering, and the sin offering, should be made

for all Israel; not only for the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, and for as many of the rest of the tribes as were come over to them, and dwelt among them; but even for the ten tribes also, sadly guilty of idolatry, and for whose reformation and good this pious prince was concerned, see Ch2 30:1.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 18 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is qâbal (“to receive”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “to receive” (qâbal) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does Exodus 26:5, which shares the word «to receive», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “to slaughter” (3× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?

Things to notice

  • These translations choose different wording for 14 words in this verse.
  • “to slaughter” occurs 3× in this single verse.
  • 10 distinct Hebrew lemmas span 18 words in this verse.
