Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 22 words from the Hebrew and 20 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 29:23 And they brought forth the he goats [for] the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them:

Ver. 23. They laid their hands upon them.] Manibus suis nixi sunt eis; by this ceremony they confessed their sins, and laid them, as it were, upon their sacrifice, indeed upon Christ, "who his own self bore our sins in his own body upon the tree." {1Pe 2:24}

Joseph Benson's Commentary

2Ch 29:23. They laid their hands upon them — The king and the elders of the people, in the name of the whole congregation: thereby owning themselves guilty before God, and expressing their desire that the guilt of their sin might be transferred upon the sacrifice. By faith we lay our hands on the Lord Jesus, and so receive the atonement, Rom 5:11. Burnt- offerings were offered with the sin-offerings, the intention of which was to give glory to the God of Israel, whom they owned as the only true God, and their God, which it was proper to do, at the same time that they were, by the sin-offering, making atonement for their offences.

Geneva Bible (1599)

Geneva Bible translators

That is, the King and the Elders, as Lev. 4:15, for they that offered a sin offering, must lay their hands upon it, to signify that they had deserved that death, and also that they did consecrate it to God to be thereby sanctified, Exod. 29:10.

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 23. They laid their hands upon them] That is, they confessed their sin; and as they had by their transgression forfeited their lives, they now offer these animals to die as vicarious offerings, their life being taken for the life of their owners.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(23) Brought forth.—Rather, brought near—viz., to the altar.

He goats.—Se ‘îrîm (“hairy ones”). A different term—çëphîrê ‘izzîm, “spring-bucks of goats”—was used in 2Ch_29:21. This latter is properly an Aramean word, and only found in late Heb., se ’îrîm being the classical term.

Laid their hands upon them.—Comp. Lev_1:4; Lev_3:2; Lev_4:4, from which it appears that the person offering laid his hand upon the head of the victim, whether he were making a burnt offering or a thank-offering or a sin-offering.

The natural fitness of the ceremony in the case of expiatory sacrifices is obvious. “The king and the congregation” performed it, in the present instance, on behalf of the entire nation.

And he set the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps,.... To play upon, which were the three principal instruments of music used in religious worship, and what had been disused in the times of Ahaz:

according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet; this sort of music was not commanded by the law of Moses, but was directed to by David under a divine influence, and was approved of by the prophets of the Lord here mentioned:

for so was the commandment of the Lord by his prophets; the Targum is,"for by the Word of the Lord was the commandment by the hand of the prophets.''
