Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 23 words from the Hebrew and 28 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 20 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 18:11 And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver [it] into the hand of the king.

Ver. 11. And all the prophets prophesied.] See 1Ki 22:12. With as much confidence as Jesuits offer to pawn their souls for the truth of their assertions, and tell us, that if we be not damned, they will be damned for us. Event, the master of fools, confuted these bold affirmers.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(11) Prophesied.—Nibbĕ’îm, “were prophesying.” Vulg., “prophetabant.” In 2Ch_18:9 the synonym mith-nabbe’îm was used, which also signifies “mad, raving” Jer_29:26). The root meaning of this word is probably visible in the Assyrian nabû, “to call, proclaim,” so that the nâbî, or prophet, was the προφήτης or spokesman of God, the herald of heaven to earth. (Comp. the name of the god Nebo, Nabi’um, who answers in the Babylonian Pantheon to the Greek Hermes.)

And prosper—i.e., and thou shalt prosper. So LXX., καὶ εὐοδωθήσῃ. Vuig., “prosperaberis.” (Comp. “This do, and live;” and Gen_20:7, “he shall pray for thee, and live thou!”)

For.—And.
