Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 29 words from the Hebrew and 31 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 14 Hebrew tokens and 27 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Ezekiel 40:24 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Joseph Benson's Commentary

Eze 40:24-26. After that he brought me to the south, &c. — The prophet having shown, by way of parenthesis, in the 23d verse, the exact correspondence between the gates of both courts, proceeds in these three verses to describe the south gate of the outer court, by the same dimensions he had before given of the east and north gate.

John Gill's Exposition

And there were windows in it, and in the arches thereof round about,.... That is, in the little chambers, though not expressed; and in the porches of them on each side, as you passed from the outer to the inner gate:

like those windows; that were in the chambers that were in the east and north gates, Eze 40:7,

the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits; see Eze 40:13.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

Having finished the measuring of the east gate, and showed the prophet the sameness of the north gate’s buildings, measures, and ornaments, now he is informed of the south gate, and its exact symmetry with the other two, which consult in Eze 40:5-11.

The south; the south point of heaven.

A gate toward the south; south part of the house.

The posts and the arches: see Eze 40:16,21,22.

Vers. 24-27The south gate. Here again the same details recur as to the structure of the gate, its dimensions, and distance from the gate which led into the inner court.

Ezekiel, in the Prophets, opens this verse with 14 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is dârôwm (“south”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “south” (dârôwm) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Deuteronomy 33:23, which shares the word «south», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “way” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «וַיּוֹלִכֵ֨נִי֙» is a Hiphil Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Joseph Benson's Commentary and Adam Clarke's Commentary read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
