The places mentioned in this verse were assigned to Manasseh. Bethshean was on the west of Jordan, and was within the borders of Issachar (Jos_17:11-13; 1Ki_4:11, 1Ki_4:12) Dor was within the borders of Asher (Jos_11:1, 2 12:23 17:11; Jud 1:27, 28) Taanach. This place also lay within the borders of Issachar or Asher (Jos_17:11, 12 21:25; Jud_1:5:19) Megiddo. This place is constantly coupled with the preceding. It lay on the south of the plain of Esdraelon (Jos_12:21 Jos_17:12; Jud 1:27; 1Ki_4:12)

1 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 19 words (13 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Taʻănâk (“Taanach”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “Taanach” (Taʻănâk) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Joshua 12:21, which shares the word «Taanach», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “daughter” (4× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «יָשְׁב֔וּ» is a Qal Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges and John Gill's Exposition read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
