Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 52 words from the Hebrew and 46 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 31 Hebrew tokens and 45 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Joshua 1:15 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Until the Lord hath given your brethren rest, as he hath given you,.... Rest from their travels, as they had:

and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God giveth them: are settled in the land of Canaan, as they were on that side Jordan:

then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it; the countries of Sihon and Og, they were put into the possession of:

which Moses the Lord's servant gave you on this side Jordan, toward the sunrising; the land, given to them lay to the east of Jordan.

Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary

Beyond. The same expression is translated on this side, ver. 14. Hebrew beheber means also, "in the passage." If we have regard to Josue, when he spoke this, he was beyond, that is on the east side of the river, though perhaps (Haydock) he might be on the other side when he wrote the history, Deuteronomy i. 1. (Calmet)

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

15. Until the Lord have given — Observe how early Joshua inculcates the idea of national unity. Perhaps he already had forebodings of the alienation of the eastern from the western tribes, in consequence of the deep trench of the Jordanic valley, the modern Ghor. It is an historic fact that this geographic insulation caused the eastern tribes to cherish a national feeling far less intense than that which animated their western brethren. Reuben, “unstable as water,” (Gen_49:4,) in consequence of his separation from the main body of the nation became a roving Bedouin tribe.

Joshua, in the Historical, opens this verse with 31 words (20 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is yᵉrushshâh (“inheritance”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “inheritance” (yᵉrushshâh) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Deuteronomy 2:5, which shares the word «inheritance», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “LORD” (3× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «יָנִ֨יחַ» is a Hiphil Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
