Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 27 words from the Hebrew and 29 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 21 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 24:9 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 24:9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection [that] Moses the servant of God [laid] upon Israel in the wilderness.

Ver. 9. The collection that Moses.] See on 2Ch 24:6.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(9) And they made a proclamation.—Literally, uttered a voice (or cry) in Judah. The phrase (nathan qôl) occurs here only in this sense. (Comp. Pro_1:20.)

To bring in to the Lord.—Comp. 2Ch_24:6. The meaning is, To bring into the Temple, for the Lord.

The collection.—Tax, or impost.

This verse, and the next one also, are peculiar to the chronicle. The writer is fond of dwelling on the willingness of the people in the good old time to contribute to the cause of religion; doubtless, by way of suggestion to his own contemporaries. (Comp. 1Ch_29:6; 1Ch_29:9; 1Ch_29:14.)

In Kings we read: “And the priests, the warders of the threshold, used to put into it all the money that was brought into the house of the Lord.”

Until they had made an end.—This is correct. The same phrase recurs, 2Ch_31:1. The ancient versions wrongly give “until it was filled.” Killâh does not mean “to make full,” as is asserted in Lange’s Commentary, but to finish any action.

John Gill's Exposition

Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king's office by the hand of the Levites,.... The place where his officer or officers met, appointed for this service; very probably in one of the chambers of the temple,

and when they saw that there was much money: see Kg2 12:10,

the king's scribe; or secretary:

and the high priest's officer; his "sagan", or deputy priest:

came and emptied the chest; poured out the money, and told it, and put it up in bags, Kg2 12:10 and took it, and carried it to its place again, Ch2 24:8, by the hands of the Levites that brought it:

and thus they did day by day; as often as the chest was full, or they perceived there was much in it:

and gathered money in abundance; enough to repair the house, ornament it, and furnish it with vessels that were wanting.

Discussion questions

  1. The word masʼêth carries the sense “burden.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. How does Genesis 43:34, which shares the word «burden», read alongside this verse?
  3. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  4. «וַיִּתְּנוּ» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  5. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
