Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 19 words from the Hebrew and 23 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 11 Hebrew tokens and 18 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 33:4 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Door43 World Missions Community

It is in Jerusalem that my name will be forever

The name is a metonym for the person. AT: "Jerusalem is where I will forever make known who I am" (See: Metonymy)

He built altars for all the stars of heaven in the two courtyards of the house of Yahweh

It is implied that he built these altars so people could make sacrifices and worship the stars. Also, he would not have built these altars himself, rather he would have commanded his workers to do it. AT: "He had his workers build altars in the two courtyards of the house of Yahweh so that the people could worship the stars and offer them sacrifices" (See: Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information and Metonymy)

Valley of Ben Hinnom

This is the name of a place near Jerusalem that is also known as Gehenna. (See: How to Translate Names)

he caused his sons to pass through the fire

You may need to make explicit why he put his son in the fire and what happened after he did so. AT: "he burned his sons to death as an offering to his gods" (See: Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information)

consulted with

"asked for information from"

the dead

This refers to dead people. AT: "dead people" or "those who are dead" (See: Nominal Adjectives)

Manasseh did much evil in the sight of Yahweh

Here Yahweh's "sight" refers to how he judges or decides on the value of something. See how you translated a similar phrase in 2 Chronicles 14:2. AT: "Manasseh did many things that Yahweh said were evil" or "He practiced the things that Yahweh considered evil" (See: Metaphor)

he provoked him to anger

"Manasseh made Yahweh very angry"

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

“In Jerusalem, My name shall be forever” Scripture decries Manasseh, who built altars to pagan deities in the very House concerning which the Holy One, blessed be He, said, “I wish My name to rest there.” The verse stated after this (verse 7) is also an expression of decrying: “And he placed the graven image of the idol that he made in the House of God, concerning which, etc.” And also the verse (8): “And I will not continue to remove Israel’s feet, etc.”

Lesson kit

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 11 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is bânâh (“to build”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word bânâh carries the sense “to build.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. 2 Chronicles 7:16 shares this passage’s theme. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “LORD” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «וּבָנָ֥ה» is Qal Perfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
