Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 20 words from the Hebrew and 21 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 9 Hebrew tokens and 14 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 26:4 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Right according to his father. His father"s comparatively long reign, sullied by two frightful stains, which were fearfully visited with a long punishment and a fatal end, is graciously recognized here for the good that was in it, and apparently credited even with a "balance to the good."

what was right in the eyes of Yahweh

The eyes represent seeing, and seeing represents thoughts or judgment. See how you translated a similar phrase in 2 Chronicles 14:2. AT: "what Yahweh judges to be right" or "what Yahweh considers to be right" (See: Metaphor)

following the example of his father, Amaziah, in everything

This implies that his father had done what was right in God's eyes. AT: "just as his father, Amaziah, had done" (See: Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information)

in everything

This is a generalization. AT: "in the same way" (See: Hyperbole and Generalization)

He set himself to seek God

Here "set himself" is a metaphor for being determined to do something. Seeking God represents choosing to know, worship, and obey him. AT: "He was determined to obey God" (See: Metaphor)

in the days of Zechariah

Here "the days of Zechariah" is a metonym referring to the time period during which Zechariah was priest. AT: "when Zechariah was priest" (See: Metonymy)

As long as he sought Yahweh

"During the whole time that he sought Yahweh"

sought Yahweh

Seeking Yahweh represents choosing to know, worship, and obey him. AT: "chose to obey Yahweh" (See: Metaphor)

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 9 words (8 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʼĂmatsyâh (“Amaziah”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word ʼĂmatsyâh carries the sense “Amaziah.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. 2 Kings 12:21 shares the word «Amaziah» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “to do” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «וַיַּ֥עַשׂ» is Qal Sequential Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
