Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 41 words from the Hebrew and 43 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 22 Hebrew tokens and 36 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 20:9 If, [when] evil cometh upon us, [as] the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name [is] in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.

Ver. 9. If when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, &c.] Which is called "evil" by a specialty. "I make peace, and create evil," i.e., war. {Isa 45:7} It is here further called a judgment by a specialty.

For thy name is in this house.] And shall it be a mere name? wilt not thou afford us the true signs and effects of thy presence?

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(9) If when evil cometh upon us.—A summary of part of Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication (2Ch_6:24-30). The reference to this prayer implies a confidence that it had been accepted in heaven, as the sign that followed it indicated (2Ch_7:1-3). Syriac, “When the sanctuary is amongst us, there will not come upon us evil, nor sword, nor judgment, &c., and we will come and stand before this house, and before Thee, because Thy name is invoked in this house; and we will come and pray before Thee in this house and thou wilt hearken to the voice of our prayer, and deliver us.” The Hebrew seems to say, “If there come upon us evil—sword (judgment), and pestilence and famine—we will stand (i.e., come forward) before this house, and before Thee, for Thy name is in this house, and we will cry unto Thee out of our distress, and Thou shalt (or that Thou mayest) hear and save.” The word rendered “judgment” (shĕphôt) is not used as a noun anywhere else; and, lacking a conjunction, it spoils the symmetry of the sentence. It is probably an ancient gloss. All the versions have it; and the Vulg. renders, “sword of judgment.” (Comp. the Syriac in 2Ch_20:12, infra.)

John Gill's Exposition

If when evil cometh upon us,.... Any calamity:

as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, God's four sore judgments, if by "judgment" is meant wild beasts:

we stand before this house; in the court before the holy place, and holy of holies:

and in thy presence, for thy name is in this house; called upon in it, and it was called by his name, and in which he dwelt:

and cry unto thee in our affliction; as Solomon prayed at the dedication of it:

then thou wilt hear and help; as the Lord promised, see Kg1 8:33.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 22 words (19 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is shᵉphôwṭ (“judgment”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word shᵉphôwṭ carries the sense “judgment.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. This is the first place “judgment” appears in Scripture (first appears here). What does its debut here establish?
  3. How does Ezekiel 23:10, which shares the word «judgment», read alongside this verse?
  4. What does the repetition of “face” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  5. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  6. «תָּב֨וֹא» is a Qal Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  7. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
