Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 20 words from the Hebrew and 23 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 14 Hebrew tokens and 19 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

2

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Exodus 36:4 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

John Gill's Exposition

And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary,.... The ingenious artificers who were employed, some in one thing, and some in another, either on the tabernacle itself, or the vessels of it, and things appertaining to it:

came every man from his work which they made; left off their work by mutual consent and agreement, and came in a body to Moses.

The Pulpit Commentary

Vers. 4, 5. At last, remonstrance had to be made. The workmen were cumbered with an overplus of material an embarras de richesses and came in a body to Moses, to make complaint. All the wise men came, every man from his work, with the cry The people bring much more than enough we are hampered in our work by the too great abundance let an end be put to it."

Keil & Delitzsch

C. F. Keil & F. Delitzsch

Then the wise workmen came, every one from his work that they were making, and said to Moses, "Much make the people to bring, more than suffices for the labour (the finishing, as in Exo 27:19) of the work," i.e., they are bringing more than will be wanted for carrying out the work (the מן in מדּי is comparative); whereupon Moses let the cry go through the camp, i.e., had proclamation made, "No one is to make any more property (מלאכה as in Exo 22:7, Exo 22:10, cf. Gen 33:14) for a holy heave-offering," i.e., to prepare anything more from his own property to offer for the building of the sanctuary; and with this he put a stop to any further offerings.

Exodus, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 14 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is châkâm (“wise”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “wise” (châkâm) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does Luke 12:42, which shares this passage’s theme, read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “all” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  5. «וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges and John Gill's Exposition read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
