Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 39 words from the Hebrew and 34 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 19 Hebrew tokens and 31 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

(10) And he set all the people.—2Ki_9:11 : “And the Couriers stood.” By “the people,” the chronicler obviously means, not the mass of the congregation, but the armed body who were to “compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand” (2Ch_23:7).

His weapon.—Or, his missiles, arms. LXX., ὅπλοα. (Comp. 2Ch_32:5.) Kings has a commoner word. The remainder of the verse is identical with its parallel.

The Pulpit Commentary

All the people; i.e. , again, all those, not being Levites and priests, who had been trusted to assist. The parallel (ver. 11) summarizes them under the name the guard. It may be just noted, in passing, that, while the Hebrew text has in both places "shoulder," i.e. for the "side" of this verse, and the "corner" of the parallel, the Revised Version has harmonized the rendering, electing the rendering side. From the right side of the temple to the left side. This is equivalent to saying, those composing the guard were placed on the south and north sides. Along by the altar. This was the altar of burnt offerings in front of the perch, and close by which the young "king stood at his pillar," or on his pedestal (ver. 13), the rows of the guard bristling with weapons before and behind and round about him.

General Information:

Throughout chapter 23, Joash is referred to as "the king." It may be helpful to your readers to occasionally add "King Joash" or "Joash the king" to make his identity explicit. (See: Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information)

with his weapon in his hand

This means they were ready to fight. See how you translated a similar phrase in 2 Chronicles 23:7.

the king's son

Here "king" refers to Joash's father. AT: "Joash, the son of the king"

put the crown on him

This is a symbolic act to show that they are making him king. (See: Symbolic Action)

gave him the covenant decrees

The symbolic act of giving him a scroll with the decrees shows that they expect him to obey them. It is unclear if these decrees were a portion of the law of Moses, or a separate set of rules for kings to obey. AT: "presented to him the covenant decrees that he should obey" (See: Symbolic Action)

anointed him

This was a symbolic act to show that he was chosen by God to be the king. (See: Symbolic Action)

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 19 words (16 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is shelach (“weapon”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word shelach carries the sense “weapon.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. The word “weapon” first appears here in Scripture. What is being introduced at this debut?
  3. 2 Chronicles 32:5 shares the word «weapon» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  4. “house” occurs 3× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  5. These translations render this verse differently. What is at stake in choosing one wording over another?
  6. The verb «וַיַּעֲמֵ֨ד» is Hiphil Sequential Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  7. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
