Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 29 words from the Hebrew and 31 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 18 Hebrew tokens and 29 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Kings 8:18 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

1Ki 8:18 And the LORD said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart.

Ver. 18. Thou didst well, that it was in thine heart.] It is God’s revealed will that men should be "ready to every good work." David was so to this of building the temple, but God had otherwise determined it. Howbeit David’s desire and intent is accepted. {2Sa 7:11, &c.} Surely as wicked men are condemned because they act against God’s command, though according to his decree: so believers are approved, not because they obey God’s decree, but his command.

John Gill's Exposition

And the Lord said unto David my father,.... By Nathan the prophet:

whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart; his design was good, and so far it was acceptable to the Lord, that he thought of such a thing, though it was not his pleasure that should do it, as follows.

The Pulpit Commentary

And the Lord said unto David my father Not, perhaps, totidem verbis. The Divine approval was implied in 2Sa_7:11-16, and it may have been expressed at the same time. The narratives of Scripture are necessarily greatly condensed, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou didst well that it was in thine heart.
