Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 27 words from the Hebrew and 34 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

2

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Deuteronomy 18:5 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

John Gill's Exposition

For the Lord thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes,.... That is, has chosen the tribe of Levi out of all the other tribes of Israel:

to stand to minister in the name of the Lord; the priests to minister to the Lord by offering sacrifices, and the Levites to minister to the priests in assisting them in their service; and both their ministry were in the name of the Lord, and for his glory, and done standing; for there was no sitting in the sanctuary (w); the priestly ministry was only performed standing (x), whatever was done sitting was rejected (y); see Heb 10:11,

him and his sons for ever; Levi and his posterity, or the posterity of the tribe of Levi, were chosen by the Lord to this service, to be employed in it as long as the ceremonial law continued, on which stood the Levitical priesthood; but both are now abolished by Christ, having their accomplishment in him, Heb 7:11.

Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary

Stand. This was the usual posture of the priests ministering in the temple, as well as of people praying. --- Minister. Samaritan and Septuagint add, "and to bless in," &c.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

To minister in the name of the Lord, i.e. either by authority and commission from him, or for his honour, worship, or service.

The Pulpit Commentary

The reason assigned for the enactment is that God had chosen the priest to stand and minister in the Name of Jehovah, i.e. not only by his appointment and authority, but with full power to act as mediator between the people and God. Him and his sons forever; referring to the establishment of the priesthood in the family of Aaron.

The priesthood.

Israel, as a holy nation, consecrated to God"s service, was a kingdom of priests". (Exo_19:6) This priestly character of the nation was represented formally in the tribe of Levi. The distinctive duties of the priesthood were discharged by the sons of Aaron, who were thus the priests strictly so called.

I THE PRIESTHOOD IN ITSELF.

1. Chosen and set apart by God. "Chosen him out of all thy tribes.

2. Holy, indicated by bodily perfection, (Lev_21:16-24) holy garments, (Ex 39) rites of dedication, (Le 8) ceremonial regulations and restrictions. (Le 21, etc.)

3. Represented the people before God. (Exo_28:12)

4. Made propitiation for sins. (Heb_5:1)

5. Gave forth oracles. (Num_27:21)

6. Had for these purposes the right of approach to God.

II THE PRIESTHOOD AS TYPICAL.

1. Of Christ. The high priest, in particular, was typical of Christ as

(1) the One Medium of approach to God (Joh_14:6; 1Ti_2:5)

(2) Inherently holy, absolutely without sin. (2Co_5:21)

(3) Representing the Church before God in his person, work, and intercession. (Heb_4:14)

(4) In his having made reconciliation for the sins of the people himself both Priest and Sacrifice. (Heb_2:17 Heb_10:12)

(5) In being the organ of Divine revelations. (Mat_11:27)

(6) For this priestly work to which he was divinely ordained (Heb_5:5) Christ has free and immediate access to the holiest of all, and has gained admission to the same for his people. (Heb_9:12 Heb_10:19)

2. Of believers.

(1) Chosen. (Psa_65:4)

(2) Consecrated. (1Co_1:2)

(3) Having freedom of approach to God. (Heb_10:19)

(4) Offering spiritual sacrifices. (1Pe_2:5)

(5) Interceding for the world. J.O.

Deuteronomy, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 15 words (12 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is shârath (“to minister”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “to minister” (shârath) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Deuteronomy 10:8, which shares this passage’s theme, read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “LORD” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «בָּחַ֛ר» is a Qal Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges and John Gill's Exposition read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
