A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Kings 13:9 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(9) Slept with his fathers.—Or, lay down (i.e., to sleep) like his fathers, i.e., as his fathers had done before him. The same phrase is used even of Amaziah, who came to a violent end (2Ki_14:22).

A Bible Commentary for English Readers, edited by Charles John Ellicott (1878–1897) — public domain. Text from a community e-Sword module.

John Gill's Exposition

And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers,.... Died, as they did:

and they buried him in Samaria; where Omri, and all the kings of Israel, that descended from him, were buried:

and Joash his son reigned in his stead; of whom a short account is given in the following verses.

The Pulpit Commentary

And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria. (comp. 1Ki_16:28; 2Ki_10:35 2Ki_13:13, etc.) The kings of Israel from the time of Omri were buried in the capital, Samaria, as those of Judah were in Jerusalem. It is uncertain whether they had one common mausoleum, like the kings of Judah, (2Ch_28:27) but it is most probable that they had. To rest with their fathers in the same royal sepulcher was to be duly honored at their death; to be excluded from it was a disgrace. And Joash his son reigned in his stead.

2 Kings, in the Historical, opens this verse with 10 words (10 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Yᵉhôwʼâchâz (“Jehoahaz”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word Yᵉhôwʼâchâz carries the sense “Jehoahaz.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. How does 2 Kings 10:35, which shares the word «Jehoahaz», read alongside this verse?
  3. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  4. «וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב» is a Qal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  5. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
