Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 33 words from the Hebrew and 36 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 19 Hebrew tokens and 33 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(24) Seven priestly trumpeters.

The priests, did blow with the trumpets.—Were blowing. (Comp. Num_10:2.) A pair of silver clarions were blown by the priests “for the calling of the assembly, and the journeying of the camps.” (See also 1Ch_16:6.) The seven priests perhaps walked immediately before the Ark, as in Jos_6:4.

of the Ark,

And Obed-edom and Jehiah were door-keepers for the ark.—Comp. 1Ch_15:23. It is hardly likely that these persons were identical with the minstrels Obed-edom and Jeiel of 1Ch_15:18; 1Ch_15:21, for (1) 1Ch_15:19-24 appear to describe the order of the procession, according to which two “doorkeepers” walked before and two behind the ark (1Ch_15:23-24), whereas Obed-edom and Jeiel the minstrels walked, playing their lutes, two places before even the first pair of doorkeepers (1Ch_15:21); (2) the name “Jeiel” is different in form and meaning from “Jehiah,” Jah liveth; (3) the recurrence of names has been too frequent to allow us to be much surprised at a second Obed-edom. (Comp. 1Ch_16:38.)

24. the priests] In Num_10:1-10 it is enjoined to make two silver trumpets to be blown by the priests on days of joy and on feast-days. This festal trumpet was different from the “cornet” (1Ch_15:28), properly a ram’s horn, which was freely used for secular purposes. See Driver, Amos, p. 144 ff. (with illustrations).

Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary

Jehias is called Jehiel, ver. 18., and 21. He, Obededom, Barachias, and Elcana, (ver. 23.) were probably the four chief porters who attended the ark in arms; and others were, afterwards, stationed at the temple, chap. ix. 17. The two former took part also in the music, ver. 21. (Calmet) --- Perhaps two preceded and two went behind the ark, to keep off the crowd. (Menochius)

The Pulpit Commentary

Between these couples probably went the seven priests blowing the trumpets. (Num_10:1-9) These trumpets were of solid silver, of one piece, were straight and narrow, and had an expanded mouth. They are found on the arch of Titus, and are described by Josephus. On the other hand, the trumpet, more correctly rendered "cornet" (rpwOv, as distinguished from our hrwOxj), which was used for proclaiming the jubilee, for announcing the new year for sentinel and other special signals, and for war, was shaped like a ram"s horn, and probably made of the same. The particular appropriateness of the use of the former on this occasion is manifest, in addition to the fact that they were the appointed trumpets for the journeying of the camp and a fortiori of the ark itself at a time so essentially religious as the present. Yet, as we learn from ver. 28, the latter were used as well, and cymbals, psalteries, and harps. The original number of the silver trumpets was two only, and they were to be sounded strictly by the anointed priests, sons of Aaron, at all events when their employment was within the sanctuary. Their employment, however, grew far more general, and we find (2Ch_5:12) that their number had risen to a hundred and twenty (so too 2Ch_13:12; Neh_12:35) For Obed-edom, the doorkeeper, see 1Ch_16:38; and therewith note on 1Ch_13:14.

1 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 19 words (16 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Yᵉchîyâh (“Jehiah”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word Yᵉchîyâh carries the sense “Jehiah.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. 1 word here appears nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible. Why might the author reach for such rare wording?
  3. 3 words make their first appearance in Scripture here. What does this debut establish?
  4. How does 1 Chronicles 11:43, which shares the word «Joshaphat», read alongside this verse?
  5. What does the repetition of “to trumpet” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  6. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  7. «מחצצרים» is a Hiphil Participle Active verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  8. Compare how The Biblical Illustrator and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
