Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 16 words from the Hebrew and 16 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — the same length.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 8 Hebrew tokens and 12 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Exodus 6:24 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Exo 6:24 And the sons of Korah; Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph: these [are] the families of the Korhites.

Ver. 24. And the sons of Korah.] There were of his sons, that died not, {Num 16:11} departing, as it seems, from their father’s tents, as all were counselled. {Num 16:24-26} Of them came Samuel the prophet, Heman the music master, and other the sons of Korah so oft mentioned in the titles of Psalms.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(24) The sons of Korah did not partake in his sin, and therefore “died not” (Num_26:11), but became the heads of important families.

24. Koraḥ’s family. It is stated in Num_26:11 that the sons of Koraḥ did not perish with their father (Num_16:32); and Koraḥites are mentioned in Num_26:58. In much later days the Koraḥites acted as gate-keepers in the Temple (1Ch_9:19; 1Ch_26:1-19), and also, probably (cf. 2Ch_20:19; and the titles of Psalms 42, 44-49, 84, 85, 87, 88), assisted in some way in the worship of the Temple. For the names, see 1Ch_6:22-23 (where, however, Elkanah is the son of Assir, and Ebiasaph [Abiasaph] the son of Elkanah), Exo_9:19 (Ebiasaph).

John Gill's Exposition

These are they which spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt,.... In the name of the Lord of hosts; and demanded the dismission of Israel, in order

to bring the children of Israel from Egypt; nor did they desist making application to him, until they had prevailed upon him to let them go:

these are that Moses and Aaron; which is repeated, that it may be observed who were the deliverers of Israel, what their names, of what tribe they were, and from whom they descended, and who sprung from them, at least from Aaron.

Lesson kit

Teaching starters — assembled from the data on this page, not authored interpretation. Every prompt links to the verse data it draws on. Edit before teaching.

Exodus, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 8 words (8 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʼĂbîyʼâçâph (“Abiasaph”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word ʼĂbîyʼâçâph carries the sense “Abiasaph.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. This verse holds 1 word here found nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible. What might the rare word draw attention to?
  3. 4 words here appear for the first time in Scripture. What is being introduced at this debut?
  4. 1 Chronicles 3:17 shares the word «Assir» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  5. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  6. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
