Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 33 words from the Hebrew and 29 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 15 Hebrew tokens and 24 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Kings 8:24 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

1Ki 8:24 Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled [it] with thine hand, as [it is] this day.

Ver. 24. Who hast kept with thy servant David.] See 1Ki 8:15. We may pray to good purpose, though in the selfsame words as before. Christ himself did so in his agony when he prayed most earnestly. Let this comfort those who complain that they cannot vary their petitions.

The Biblical Illustrator

Joseph S. Exell

1Ki_8:24

Who hast kept with Thy servant David my father that Thou promisedst him.

The promises of God

I. It has pleased God to deal with His people in all ages, by way of promise.

II. His power is constantly engaged in fulfilling His promises.

1. His power is exercised in illustration and vindication of His truth in the promises.

2. In proof that His power is supreme and unlimited. Is not His power equal to the love of His heart? All resources are His.

3. His power is always exercised in proof of His faithfulness.

III. There are some special seasons when we are called upon to bear testimony to His faithfulness in His promises.

1. When looking back to the advent of the Saviour.

2. And to another period, not less memorable, the effusion of the Holy Ghost.

3. And to the day of individual conversion.

4. Another special season is that of our consecration and dedication.

5. When we have received extraordinary mercies, we ought to acknowledge His faithfulness. (Evangelical Preacher.)

Trust in Gods faithfulness

God was under no obligation to covenant with you for your redemption; but since He has covenanted it ceases to be a matter of mercy and becomes a matter of truth. It had nothing to do with your deserts, but it has something to do with His honour. Like the coloured woman in the South, who was very old, and poor, and ignorant, but very confident she was going to heaven. Why, said one, nobody knows anything about you, and if you go to hell the universe will be ignorant of it. No, said she, it wont make any difference to the universe, but it will make a great difference to the Lord, because His honour would be for ever gone. So, the great thing is to trust Him, and He will be true to Himself and to you, and the habit of meditating on His mercies begets the confident hopefulness of His future absolute fidelity. (A. T. Pierson, D. D.)

Gods promises

To turn to the promises of God is like turning to a sky lighted with constellations of suns; or to a world bespangled with rarest flowers; or to a land flowing with milk and honey. To record the promises would be a task almost equal to transscribing the Bible. (R. Venting.)

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 24. Who has kept with thy servant David] This is in reference to 2Sa 7:13, where God promises to David that Solomon shall build a house for the name of the Lord. The temple being now completed, this promise was literally fulfilled.

Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him..... Concerning a son, his successor, and the builder of the temple:

The Pulpit Commentary

Who hast kept with thy servant David my father. Solomon sees in this a special pledge of God"s faithfulness and truth that thou promisedst Heb. spakest, same word as below. The alteration in the A.V obscures the connexion: thou spakest also Heb. and thou spakest, i.e., "yea," or "for thou spakest" with thy mouth and hast fulfilled it with thine hand ver. 15, and 1Ki_3:6. The completion of the house, following the establishment of Solomon upon the throne, was to him proof conclusive that the promise of 2Sa 7. had received its fulfilment, as it is this day.

1 Kings, in the Historical, opens this verse with 15 words (12 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is mâlêʼ (“to fill”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “to fill” (mâlêʼ) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does 2 Samuel 7:16, which shares this passage’s theme, read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “to speak” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «שָׁמַ֗רְתָּ» is a Qal Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and The Biblical Illustrator read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
