Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 40 words from the Hebrew and 43 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 19 Hebrew tokens and 30 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 26:28 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Joseph Benson's Commentary

1Ch 26:28. Whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, &c. — Who is particularly named here, and 1Ch 26:26, because they were chiefly committed to his trust, he being, it seems, a person of eminent wisdom and faithfulness.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(28) And all that Samuel the seer.—The enumeration of those who had dedicated spoil is resumed from 1Ch_26:26. The seer (rô’èh), the ancient term for prophet (nâbî’). 1Sa_9:9.

And whosoever had dedicated any thing.—These words point to a general prevalence of the practice of dedicating to God the spoils of war. (Comp. 2Sa_8:11; 2Ki_12:18). The Law, in fact, ordained the dedication of all metals to the endowment of the Sanctuary (Num_31:22-23; Num_31:50; Jos_6:19). These accumulations of spoil in the times preceding David help us to understand how it was that so much wealth was available for building and decorating the Temple (1Ch_22:14-16).

Under the hand of Shelomith.—Comp. the same phrase in 1Ch_25:2-3.

John Gill's Exposition

And his brethren, men of valour, were two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers,.... That is, the brethren or kinsmen of Jerijah the Hebronite were so many principal men in their families, and men of fortitude and courage:

whom King David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh; all which lay on the other side Jordan; and being so remote from the seat of civil government, and of the worship of God, they were in greater danger of revolting, both from their obedience to their king, and duty to their God; land therefore so large a number was appointed over them, to instruct them and keep them in their duty to both, as follows:

for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king; to see that they kept close to the pure worship and service of God; and were faithful and loyal subjects of the king.

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The foundations of a sacred treasury had therefore been laid as far back as the time of Samuel, when the Israelites began to recover from their last servitude. Such a treasury had been once before established, namely, under Joshua Jos 6:24; but it appears to have been soon exhausted, and we hear nothing of it under any of the later judges until Samuel.

Samuel, while he was at the head of affairs. (Menochius) --- Joab. Though these three were not very religious, they concurred in promoting the splendour of the public worship, as that would at least procure them applause. (Haydock)

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

28. All that Samuel… Saul… Abner… and Joab… had dedicated — Here it appears that the sacred treasury had been receiving contributions from the chief men of Israel as far back as the time of Samuel. Comp. also Jos_6:24.

The Pulpit Commentary

It is, perhaps, somewhat remarkable that, though the sacred history suggests to us numerous fit occasions for the "dedications" spoken of in this verse, yet they are not described in detail, nor even alluded to at the times when they occurred. Samuel, Saul, Abner, and Joab had then been unwittingly finding some of the treasures now disposed to highest use by David.
