Greek LXX Structure differs

The Septuagint has no separate book of Nehemiah. Its Greek text is the second half of Esdras B (2 Esdras), chapters 11–23; Ezra is the first half (1–10).

A verse-for-verse comparison isn’t shown here because the chapters and verses don’t line up. Switch to the LXX edition with the MT / LXX toggle above to read the Greek directly.

Commentary

Notes on Nehemiah 7:39 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

OF THE PRIESTS. (Neh. 7:39-73)

The priests--It appears that only four of the courses of the priests returned from the captivity; and that the course of Abia (Luk 1:5) is not in the list. But it must be noticed that these four courses were afterwards divided into twenty-four, which retained the names of the original courses which David appointed.

Lesson kit

Nehemiah, in the Historical, opens this verse with 9 words (9 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Yᵉdaʻyâh (“Jedaiah”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word Yᵉdaʻyâh carries the sense “Jedaiah.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. 1 Chronicles 9:10 shares the word «Jedaiah» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  4. Reading how Jamieson, Fausset & Brown and Tyndale Open Study Notes read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
