Greek LXX Structure differs

The Septuagint has no separate book of Nehemiah. Its Greek text is the second half of Esdras B (2 Esdras), chapters 11–23; Ezra is the first half (1–10).

A verse-for-verse comparison isn’t shown here because the chapters and verses don’t line up. Switch to the LXX edition with the MT / LXX toggle above to read the Greek directly.

Commentary

Notes on Nehemiah 3:23 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Neh 3:23 After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house.

Ver. 23. Over against their house] {See Trapp on "Neh 3:10"}

23. After him] R.V. After them. Marg. Heb. him, see on Neh_3:2.

by his house] R.V. beside his own house. Judging from the marked manner in which it is mentioned in Neh_3:24, Azariah’s house must have been conspicuous for its size or its position near the wall. A difference of aspect is implied by ‘over against’ and ‘beside.’

John Gill's Exposition

Palal the son of Uzai, over against the turning of the wall,.... Who dwelt there, and so repaired what was right against him:

and the tower which lieth out from the king's high house: which might be built for prospect, or his upper house:

that was by the court of the prison; and we often read in Jeremiah of the court of the prison being in or near the king's house, see Jer 32:2,

after him Pedaiah the son of Parosh; went on from hence with the repair.
