Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 48 words from the Hebrew and 57 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 25 Hebrew tokens and 41 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Slay her not in the house of the Lord . . . and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king's house, they slew her there--The high priest ordered her immediately to be taken out of the temple grounds and put to death. "And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which horses came into the king's house: and there was she slain" (Kg2 11:16). "Now, we are not to suppose that horses came into [the king's house] of residence, but into the king's (horses') house or hippodrome (the gate of the king's mules) [JOSEPHUS], he had built for them on the southeast of the temple, in the immediate vicinity of the horse gate in the valley of Kedron--a valley which was at that time a kind of desecrated place by the destruction of idols and their appurtenances" (Kg2 23:2, Kg2 23:6, Kg2 23:12) [BARCLAY, City of the Great King].

(14) Then.—And. This verse is the same as 2Ki_11:15, with a few formal variations.

Brought out.—Kings, “commanded.” The Heb. words are so nearly alike that one may easily be a corruption of the other. The Syriac and Arabic agree with Kings. The LXX. gives both readings.

Have her forth of the ranges.—Make her go out between the ranks of guards.

Let him be slain.—An explanation of the form used in Kings (the infinitive).

Slay her not.—Ye must not slay her. Kings, “Let her not be slain.” So the Syriac here.

The Pulpit Commentary

Brought out, axewOYw,for "commanded" in the parallel, wXyw; and this is probably right, the Hebrew in our text probably a clerical or copyist"s error. The ranges; twOrdec. This word is found only in three other places, viz. twice in the parallel (its vers. 8, 15), Revised Version "ranks," and in 1Ki_6:9, where it is rendered in the Authorized Version "the boards," but in the Revised Version "the planks," and margin "rows." The ranges are commonly supposed to mean the ranks or rows of soldiers. The Vulgate (septa templi) has understood them to mean the precincts of the temple. The indications of the remarkable but not uncommon prepositional expression, tyBemiAla, (enjoying the analogy of ether compounded prepositional expressions, as ngGmiAla xWjmiAla) favours the idea that Jehoiada said, Have her forth from inside "the house of the Lord" (ver. 12), to within your ranks, and there take care to make a way for her, no one with immature zeal following to slay her there, at the jeopardy of his own life, for under no case let her be slain in the house of the Lord.

Jehoiada

Translate this man's name as in 2 Chronicles 22:11. (See: How to Translate Names)

the commanders of hundreds

The phrase "commander of hundreds" is probably an official title for a military officer. Possible meanings are 1) the word "hundreds" represents the exact amount of soldiers that these commanders led. AT: "the commanders of 100 soldiers" or 2) the word translated as "hundreds" does not represent an exact number, but is the name of a military division. See how you translated this in 2 Chronicles 23:1. AT: "the commanders of military divisions" (See: Numbers)

who were over the army

"who were leaders in the army"

Bring her out between the ranks

Possible meanings are 1) "Surround her and bring her out of the temple courtyard" or 2) "Remove her from the people in the temple courtyard"

anyone who follows her, let him be killed with the sword

This can be stated in active form. It is implied that people who followed her would be trying to help her. AT: "Use your sword to kill anyone who comes to help her" (See: Active or Passive and Assumed Knowledge and Implicit Information)

For the priest had said

"For Jehoiada the priest had said"

as she went into the entrance of the Horse Gate of the king's house

Some versions have "and took her to the Horse Gate near the entrance of the kings' house"

the king's house

"the royal palace"

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 25 words (19 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is sᵉdêrâh (“row”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “row” (sᵉdêrâh) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. 1 Kings 6:9 shares the word «row» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “to go out” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  5. The verb «וַיּוֹצֵא֩» is Hiphil Sequential Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
