Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 25 words from the Hebrew and 27 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 23 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 28:3 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

1Ch 28:3 But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou [hast been] a man of war, and hast shed blood.

Ver. 3. But God said unto me, Thou shalt not.] The best are sometimes crossed in their desires, and must submit to God; going on to do their duty, though they should not have the fruit of it till they come to heaven; howbeit "in the doing" - not only for the doing - of God’s will, "there is great reward." {Psa 19:11} This, an ancient calleth Praemium ante praemium.

Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset & David Brown

thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood--The church or spiritual state of the world, of which the temple at Jerusalem was to be a type, would be presided over by One who was to be pre-eminently the Prince of Peace, and therefore would be represented not so fitly by David, whose mission had been a preparatory one of battle and conquest, as by his son, who should reign in unbroken peace.

1 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 13 words (12 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is shâphak (“to pour”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “to pour” (shâphak) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. 1 Chronicles 22:8 shares this passage’s theme. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  4. The verb «אָ֣מַר» is Qal Perfect. How does its form color the action?
  5. Reading how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Jamieson, Fausset & Brown read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
