Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 20 words from the Hebrew and 19 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 18 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 23:22 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 22. Their brethren the sons of Kish took them.] This was according to the law made Nu 27:1, &c., and Nu 36:5-9, in favour of the daughters of Zelophehad, that women who were heiresses should marry in the family of the tribe of their father, and that their estates should not be alienated from them.

(22) And Eleazar died, and had no sons.—Thus his house merged in that of the sons of Kish, who married his daughters according to the Law (Num_36:6-9). The sons of Mahli, then, were represented in David’s day by the house of Kish. (See 1Ch_24:29.)

John Gill's Exposition

These were the sons of Levi, after the house of their fathers,.... According to the three classes of them, as descending from the three sons of Levi:

even the chief of the fathers; or heads of families:

as they were counted by number of names by their polls; or according to their heads, one by one:

that did the work for the service of the house of the Lord; the particulars of which are in Ch1 23:28.

from the age of twenty years, and upwards; they were first numbered thirty and upwards, Ch1 23:3, but David before his death ordered they should be numbered from twenty and upwards, Ch1 23:27, because the Israelites being increased, there would be more work for the priests in the temple, which would require the assistance of more Levites. The reasons follow.

1 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 13 words (11 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Qîysh (“Kish”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “Kish” (Qîysh) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. 1 Samuel 9:1 shares the word «Kish» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “son” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «וַיָּ֨מָת֙» is Qal Sequential Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Geneva Bible (1599) and Adam Clarke's Commentary read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
