Greek LXX Structure differs

The Septuagint has no separate book of Nehemiah. Its Greek text is the second half of Esdras B (2 Esdras), chapters 11–23; Ezra is the first half (1–10).

Commentary

Notes on Nehemiah 3:27 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Neh 3:27 After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel.

Ver. 27. After them the Tekoites] The people whereof had repaired before, Neh 3:5, now also the priests, but not the nobles: they continued still stout and stiffnecked, as Neh 3:5.

Joseph Benson's Commentary

Neh 3:27. After them the Tekoites repaired — The same spoken of before, who, having despatched their first share sooner than their brethren, freely offered to supply the defects of others, who, as it seems, neglected that part of the work which had been committed to them. And this their double diligence is noted, both for the greater shame of their nobles, who would not do any part of it, and for their own honour, who were so far from being corrupted by that bad example, that they were quickened to greater zeal and industry in this pious work.

27. After them] R.V. After him, i.e. after Pedaiah the son of Parosh (Neh_3:25).

the Tekoites] See note on Neh_3:5.

another piece] R.V. another portion.

the great tower that lieth out] R.V. standeth out.

The adjective ‘great’ is perhaps intended to distinguish this tower from that similarly mentioned in Neh_3:25-26. It may have been one of the defences on the eastern side of the Temple.

even unto the wall of Ophel] R.V. and unto the wall of Ophel. This is clearly the same wall as that mentioned in 2Ch_27:3; 2Ch_33:14.

John Gill's Exposition

After them repaired Zadok the son of Immer, over against his house,.... After the last of the priests, this begun where they ended, and repaired as far as his house reached; and being, perhaps, a person of some note, his house might be a large one:

after him repaired also Shemaiah, the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the east gate; that is, of the temple; for the gates of the city having been burnt so long, it cannot be thought there should be a keeper of any of them.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

The Tekoites; the same spoken of before, Neh 3:5, who having despatched their first share sooner than their brethren had done theirs, freely offered their help to supply the defects of others, who, as it seems, neglected that part of the work which had been committed to them. And this their double diligence is noted, both for the greater shame of their nobles, who would not do ally part of it, Neh 3:5, and for their own greater honour, who were so far from being corrupted by the bad example of their nobles, that they were rather quickened and inflamed to greater zeal and industry in this public and pious work.

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

27. Tekoites repaired another piece — In addition to what they had done on the outer wall. Neh_3:5. The great tower that lieth out was apparently a tower noted for its great size, or height, and not identified with the one mentioned in the two preceding verses. It seems to have been connected with the wall of Ophel, which latter was identical with, or a continuation of, that on which Jotham and Manasseh had built. See 2Ch_27:3; 2Ch_33:14, notes.

The Pulpit Commentary

The Tekoites repaired another piece. Compare ver. 5. Their "second piece" appears to have extended from the "great tower" to the wall built by Shallum on the western side of the spur which reached as far as the pool of Siloam (ver. 15). This is here called "the wall of Ophel."

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Tekoites - The same spoken of before, who having dispatched their first share sooner than their brethren, freely offered to supply the defects of others, who, as it seems, neglected that part of the work which had been committed to them. Discussion questions

  1. How does “Ophel” (ʻÔphel) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does 2 Chronicles 27:3, which shares the word «Ophel», read alongside this verse?
  3. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  4. «הֶחֱזִ֥יקוּ» is a Hiphil Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  5. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Joseph Benson's Commentary read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
