Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 21 words from the Hebrew and 24 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 16 Hebrew tokens and 21 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Exodus 40:19 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 19. He spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle] By the tent, in this and several other places, we are to understand the coverings made of rams' skins, goats' hair, c., which were thrown over the building for the tabernacle had no other kind of roof.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible (1810–1826) — public domain. Text from a community e-Sword/MySword module.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(19) He spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle.—Erected, i.e., the wooden framework, with the covering of goats’-hair, which formed the true tent (’ohel), and so roofed in the Tabernacle (mishkan).

Put the covering . . . above upon it.—“The covering” (miksêh) is the outer protection of rams’ skins and seals’ skins. (See Exo_26:14.)

John Gill's Exposition

And he brought the ark into the tabernacle,.... Into that part of it called the holy of holies:

and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; the vail which divided between the and most holy place, and so kept out of sight the ark of the testimony within, from being seen by any, even by the priests in the holy place:

as the Lord commanded Moses; Exo 26:33.

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The tent-cloth was spread over the tabernacle-cloth, and the covering of skins was put over the tent-cloth. See Exo 26:1 note.

The Pulpit Commentary

He spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle. The entire distinctness of the tent ("ohel) from the tabernacle (mishkan) is here very strongly marked. The "tent" was the goats" hair covering, with the framework of wood that supported it. The covering. The outer covering of rams" skins and seals" skins. (see Exo_26:14)

Exodus, in the Pentateuch, opens this verse with 16 words (12 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is mikçeh (“covering”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “covering” (mikçeh) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. Genesis 8:13 shares the word «covering» with this verse. How do the two illuminate each other?
  3. “tent” occurs 2× in this one verse. What is the effect of the repetition?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. The verb «וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ» is Qal Sequential Imperfect. How does its form color the action?
  6. Reading how Adam Clarke's Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse, where do the two commentators agree and where do they part?
