Greek LXX Structure differs

The Septuagint has no separate book of Nehemiah. Its Greek text is the second half of Esdras B (2 Esdras), chapters 11–23; Ezra is the first half (1–10).

A verse-for-verse comparison isn’t shown here because the chapters and verses don’t line up. Switch to the LXX edition with the MT / LXX toggle above to read the Greek directly.

Commentary

Notes on Nehemiah 10:9 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

The Pulpit Commentary

Vers. 9-13. Jeshua, Binnui, and Kadmiel represent the three chief families of returned Levites. (see Ezr_2:40 Ezr_3:9 Neh_7:43, 44 9:4, 5, etc.) Binnui, it may be remarked, has now supplanted Kadmiel, and stepped into the second place. Of the remaining names, those of Hashabiah and Sherebiah designate families which returned with Ezra. (Ezr_8:18, Ezr_8:19) The remaining names are probably also those of families.

Nehemiah, in the Historical, opens this verse with 8 words (7 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʼĂzanyâh (“Azaniah”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word ʼĂzanyâh carries the sense “Azaniah.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. 1 word here appears nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible. Why might the author reach for such rare wording?
  3. This is the first place “Azaniah” appears in Scripture (first appears here). What does its debut here establish?
  4. How does Ezra 3:9, which shares the word «Henadad», read alongside this verse?
  5. What does the repetition of “son” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  6. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  7. Compare how Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers and The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?

Things to notice

  • 1 word in this verse appears nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible.
  • 1 word makes its first canonical appearance in Scripture here.
  • These translations choose different wording for 3 words in this verse.
  • “son” occurs 2× in this single verse.
  • 7 distinct Hebrew lemmas span 8 words in this verse.
