Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 6:71 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

THE CITIES OF THE GERSHONITES.

(Camp. Jos_21:27-33.) 1Ch_6:71-76.

(71) Unto the sons of Gershom.—Supply they gave, from 1Ch_6:67.

Golan in Bashan (comp. the classical Gaulanitis, a district east of the sea of Galilee) was a city of refuge, like Hebron and Shechem.

Ashtaroth.—Images of Ashtoreth (Astarte, queen of heaven); a name like Anathoth (1Ch_6:60), which means “images of Anath,” or Anatum, the consort of Anurn (the sky). The two cities must have been ancient seats of the worship of Ashtoreth and Anath. The names still survive in Tell-Ashtereh and Anâta. Joshua (50100) reads Be’eshterah—perhaps a popular pronunciation of Beth-Ashterah (house of Ashtoreth).

(72) Kedesh means “sanctuary.” Jos_19:20; Jos_21:28 has Kishion, which may have borne the other name, as being the seat of a famous sanctuary.

(73) Ramoth.—In Joshua 21 Jarmuth, but in Jos_19:21 Remeth. Jarmuth occurs in Jos_12:11, and is probably right.

Anem.—Jos_21:29; Jos_19:21 has En-gannim. Jos_15:34 mentions a Judæan city called ha-Enam (the two fountains), and that not far from En-gannim (fount of gardens). Anem is very much like Enam.

(74) Mashal is perhaps a popular pronunciation of Mish’al (Jos_21:30; Jos_19:26). (Comp. Shçlâh = She’çlâh.)

(75) Hukok.—Helkath (Jos_19:25). Hukkôk was a city of Naphtali (Jos_19:34).

(76) Kedesh in Galilee.—A city of refuge (Jos_21:32); the modern Kedes.

Hammon =Haminoth-dor, “hot springs of Dor” (Jos_21:32); also called Hammath (Jos_19:35).

Kirjathaim.—In Jos_21:32 Kartan; a contracted form of the dual of Kereth (=Kirjah), like Dothan for Dothaim. (Dothain, Gen_37:17.)

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 71. - 77. We shall see from Jos 21:28, c., that several of these cities have different names.

How barren to us is this register, both of incident and interest! and yet, as barren rocks and sandy deserts make integral and necessary parts of the globe so do these genealogical tables make necessary parts of the history of providence and grace in the maintenance of truth, and the establishment of the Church of Christ. Therefore no one that fears God will either despise or lightly esteem them.

The Pulpit Commentary

Golan was one of the three cities of refuge east of the Jordan, (Jos_20:8) the other two being Bezer, of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, of the tribe of Gad. Ashtaroth, in its previous history, had been closely connected with Og King of Bashan (Deuteronomy. Jos_9:9, 10 12:4, 5 13:12) It is called Beeshterah in Jos_21:27.

1 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 15 words (11 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Gôwlân (“Golan”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “Golan” (Gôwlân) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. How does Deuteronomy 4:43, which shares the word «Golan», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “common land” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. Compare how Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
