Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 20 words from the Hebrew and 22 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 21 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 27:15 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(15) Heldai (living).—The same as “Heled” (life) in 1Ch_11:30.

Of Othniel.—Of the clan so called. (Comp. Jos_15:17.) His town was Netophah, near Bethlehem.

Of the whole list of twelve generals, it is noticeable that eight—viz., the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth—belonged to the royal tribe of Judah. Of the remaining four, the second perhaps, and the ninth certainly, was a Benjamite; the seventh and eleventh were Ephraimites.

of Othniel] Cp. Jdg_1:13; Jdg_3:9. Thus Heldai was not of pure Israelite descent, but belonged to the Kenizzites (Kenaz), a younger branch of the Calebites, who, it seems, were a tribe incorporated into Judah either shortly before or during the conquest of Canaan. Holdai, called Heled, the son of Baana, chap. xi. 30., and 2 Kings xxiii. 29. --- Gothoniel. So the Septuagint write Othoniel, (Haydock) so famous in the book of Judges, i. 13., and iii. 9.

The Pulpit Commentary

For Heldai, who belonged to Judah, see 1Ch_11:30, where the name appears as Heled, and 2Sa_23:29, where it appears as Heleb. For Othniel (who was nephew and son-in-law of Caleb, and first deliverer of the people after Joshua), see Jos_15:17; Jud_1:3:9. These twelve captains then come from Judah seven, from Benjamin and Ephraim two each, and from Levi one.
