Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 36 words from the Hebrew and 35 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 16 Hebrew tokens and 26 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Ezekiel 41:25 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

Eze 41:25 And [there were] made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as [were] made upon the walls; and [there were] thick planks upon the face of the porch without.

Ver. 25. Cherubims and palm trees.] Let ministers resemble angels, and they shall be victorious, and well rewarded. The palm is a symbol of constance, and of a crown.

Adam Clarke's Commentary

Verse 25. There were thick planks] The wood, or planks, were thick and strong; for the cherubim and palm trees were carved in relief, out of their substance, and unless they had been of considerable thickness, this could not have been done.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(25) Thick planks.—After stating that the doors just described were ornamented like the walls, the prophet speaks of something that was on the outer front of the porch. What this was, is extremely doubtful, as the word is elsewhere used only in 1Ki_7:6, of something in front of Solomon’s cloisters or “porch of pillars.” Perhaps the best suggestion is that it may have been a moulding of wood. The word in the original is in the singular.

25. The doors of the holy place were carved with cherubs and palm trees just as the walls (Eze_41:17 seq.).

thick planks upon the face] The word rendered “thick planks” (‘ab) occurs again 1Ki_7:6 in connexion with a porch, but is of uncertain meaning. Here it is said to lie outside the porch and in front of it, and might be the “landing” at the top of the flight of steps. Others think of an overhanging on the front of the roof, to protect the entrance. But in 1Ki_7:7 the ‘ab fronts the pillars, as here it faces the porch. Therefore perhaps: “and a landing of wood in front of the porch on the outside.” No doubt “without” might describe the lie of the porch in reference to the house and not the lie of the ‘ab in reference to the porch; in which case the ‘ab would be something between the holy place and the porch, and in fact the description in Eze_41:26 refers to the inside of the porch. Still this is less probable.

And there were narrow windows,.... See Eze 41:16,

and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch; upon the posts that were on each side the porch, north and south; Eze 40:16,

and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks; that is, there were palm trees upon the side chambers, which were in number thirty, Eze 41:6 and upon the planks also; every part of this fabric within and without were ornamented.

Narrow windows: see Eze 41:16.

Palm trees: see Eze 41:18.

On the one side and on the other side; on the north and on the south side, as you enter in from east toward the west; thus the sides of the porch outward were garnished.

Upon the side chambers; which were thirty in a row, and three stories high: see Eze 41:6.

Thick planks; alike carved and beautified, and alike strengthening and defending the places where they were used.

Ezekiel, in the Prophets, opens this verse with 16 words (13 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is ʻâb (“threshold”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “threshold” (ʻâb) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does 1 Kings 7:6, which shares the word «threshold», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “to do” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently. What is at stake in choosing one wording over another?
  5. «וַעֲשׂוּיָ֨ה» is a Qal Participle Passive verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Jamieson, Fausset & Brown read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
