Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 23 words from the Hebrew and 28 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 10 Hebrew tokens and 18 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Ezekiel 48:12 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

John Gill's Exposition

And this shall be the measures thereof,.... Of the city:

the north side four thousand and five hundred; that is, measures or reeds:

the south side four thousand and five hundred, and on the east side four thousand and five hundred, and the west side four thousand and five hundred; in all eighteen hundred measures or reeds, as in Eze 48:35 which denotes the largeness of the Gospel church, especially in the latter day; when Jews and Gentiles will be converted, and multitudes, east, west, north and south, will be gathered to it; and as it is an equilateral square, this shows the perfection, firmness, stability, and duration of the church of Christ; so the holy city, the New Jerusalem, is for the same reasons said to be foursquare, Rev 21:16.

Matthew Poole's English Annotations

This oblation; which, as it were the primitiae of the land, was ordered to be first set out for God.

Offered; set apart, and dedicated to God. Shall be unto them a thing most holy; in the account both of the priests and the whole people it shall be most holy, on no occasion to be servant unto any common uses.

By the border of the Levites; it shall lie next to the Levites; these lay southward between the priests’ and the city’s portion.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

separated [Heb. תְּרוּמִיָה,] separated. תְּרוּמָה is the noun, separation. תְּרוּמִיָה means separated. And this strip shall be separated for them, from the offering of the land, from the great separation that was separated from the land, whose length is from the ocean to the eastern border by the width of 25,000, as is stated above. From it, they shall set apart this strip, at the middle of its length, for the priests and for the Sanctuary.

holy of holies for the entire great separation is holy for the priests, the Levites, the prince, the possession of the city, and those who serve the city, as he proceeds to explain. This 25,000 in length and 10,000 in width in its north which is separated from it [the total holy area] shall be “holy of holies” for the priests and the Sanctuary.”

alongside the border of the Levites [Heb. אֶל-גְבוּל הַלְוִים, lit., to the border of the Levites,] alongside the strips of the Levites.
