Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 31 words from the Hebrew and 23 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 14 Hebrew tokens and 16 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 8:16 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(16) Now.—And, here equivalent to so.

Prepared = completed. (2Ch_29:35; 2Ch_35:10; 2Ch_35:16; a late use of the word nâkôn.)

Unto the day of the foundation . . . until it was finished.—Solomon’s activity is apparently divided into two periods, viz., the preparations which he made before and up to the foundation of the Temple (2 Chronicles 2), and secondly, the prosecution of the work to its completion (2Ch_3:1 to 2Ch_5:1). (The Heb. Is, unto that day of the foundation,” i.e., that memorable day, see 2Ch_3:1-3.) All the versions, however, understand from the day of the foundation unto the completion of the Temple, and perhaps ‘ad ha-yôm is, in the chronicler’s Hebrew equivalent to lĕmin ha-yôm, expressing the terminus a quo.

So the house of the Lord was perfected.—Omit so, and comp. 1Ki_9:25, “and he finished [same root as perfected] the house.” The verse thus closes the entire account of the building and inauguration of the Temple.

unto the day … was perfected] LXX offers a much shorter and smoother text, from the day on which it was founded until Solomon perfected the house of the Lord. This reading is probably right.

The Pulpit Commentary

Was prepared. This is the niph. of WK; and occurs eight times in Chronicles, but in other conjugations forty-two times. The evident signification is, Thus was all the work of Solomon steadily ordered to the day of foundation of the house and on uninterruptedly till it was finished; i.e. there was no remitting of diligence and care from the beginning to the end of the grand undertaking. For of this the Chronicle-history has told us, first in ch. 2., and then in ch. 3-8.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 14 words (11 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is mûwçâd (“foundation”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. How does “foundation” (mûwçâd) shape what this verse is saying?
  2. This is the first place “foundation” appears in Scripture (first appears here). What does its debut here establish?
  3. How does Isaiah 28:16, which shares the word «foundation», read alongside this verse?
  4. What does the repetition of “until” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  5. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  6. «וַתִּכֹּן֙» is a Niphal Sequential Imperfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  7. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Geneva Bible (1599) read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
