Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 19 words from the Hebrew and 20 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 20 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 12:30 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

1Ch 12:30 And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.

Ver. 30. Twenty thousand and eight hundred.] This was no great number for so numerous a tribe.

John Trapp, A Commentary or Exposition upon All the Books of the Old and New Testament (1647–1656) — public domain. Text from a community e-Sword module.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(30) Famous throughout the house of their fathers.—Rather, men of name (renown, as in Gen_6:4), arranged according to their clans. The phrase “men of renown” is a natural addition to “valiant heroes,” and need occasion no surprise. Doubtless their renown was collective. The comparative smallness of Ephraim’s contingent is noticeable. If this tribe was not already declining within the Mosaic period (comp. Num_1:33; Num_26:37), it may have been greatly reduced by the last wars of Saul with the Philistines (comp. 2Sa_2:9).

And of the sons of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren, etc. Do not wonder that only three thousand came to him, because “heretofore their majority kept the watch of the house of Saul,” to help them.
