Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 28 words from the Hebrew and 25 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — closely comparable.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 13 Hebrew tokens and 17 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Targum (Aramaic paraphrase)

1

The Targum is the ancient Jewish Aramaic paraphrase of the Hebrew Scriptures — an interpretive translation, not the Hebrew text itself. Onkelos (literal) and Pseudo-Jonathan (expansive) render the Torah, and Jonathan the Prophets. Coverage is partial: where no permissively-licensed English translation exists for a verse, only the Aramaic is shown. This is verse-level text, not a word-by-word alignment to the Hebrew.

Commentary

Notes on Joshua 18:15 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

John Gill's Exposition

And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjathjearim,.... Where the western quarter ended:

and the border went out on the west; not directly south, but somewhat westerly. It is, in the original, "the sea", and should be rendered, "from the sea", or "from the west" (m); and Jarchi confesses his ignorance, and says, I know not what sea it is; and well he might, for there was no sea here; but the Mediterranean sea, being to the west of the land of Israel, it is often used for the west in the Hebrew language, and so here:

and went out to the well of waters of Nephtoah; See Gill on Jos 15:9;

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible

Daniel D. Whedon

15. End of Kirjath-jearim — The extreme western suburbs of the town. The suburbs of the Levitical cities were a thousand cubits from the outer wall, or nearly half a mile, and the suburbs of Kirjath-jearim may have extended much further. This will explain the obscure statement that follows: the border went out on the west, or seaward. That is, the southern border of Benjamin, starting from Kirjath, ran first westward to the extreme suburbs of the city, perhaps a mile or two: then, starting again from the city, it ran eastward, and was identical with the northern border of Judah. See notes on Jos_15:5-9.

Rashi

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi)

And the southern side— Referring to the southern border of Binyomin which is identical with the northern border of Yehudah. All the borders that are listed here are listed relative to the north of Yehudah, and every place described here as descending, is described in reference to Yehudah as going up because here he is listing [boundaries] from west to east and there he lists them from east to west.

And the boundary extended to the sea— to a sea, but I do not know which sea it is.

Joshua, in the Historical, opens this verse with 13 words (11 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is Nephtôwach (“Nephtoah”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. The word Nephtôwach carries the sense “Nephtoah.” How does it shape the verse?
  2. How does Joshua 15:9, which shares the word «Nephtoah», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “Kirjath-jearim” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. The translations on this page render this verse differently — a whole-verse word diff, not a word-by-word alignment. What might account for the different wordings?
  5. «וְיָצָ֤א» is a Qal Sequential Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Geneva Bible (1599) and The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
