Hebrew & Septuagint length

In the original languages it is 11 Hebrew tokens and 19 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 2 Chronicles 27:8 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Trapp's Complete Commentary

John Trapp

2Ch 27:8 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem.

Ver. 8. He was five and twenty years old.] See on 2Ch 27:1. This is here repeated, to show that he persevered in well doing to his death, saith the Gloss here.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(8) He was five and twenty years old.—A word for word repetition of 2Ki_15:33, omitting the last clause about the queen-mother. Perhaps in one of the chronicler’s sources this notice occurred at the beginning, and in another at the end of the reign. This would account for its repetition here, after having been already stated in 2Ch_27:1.

The Pulpit Commentary

This verse is identical with so much of per. 1 as has to do with same subject; that it is no mere careless repeated insertion, however, is evidenced by the name Jotham in that verse, in the place occupied by was in this verse.

The Pulpit Commentary (1880–1919), ed. H.D.M. Spence-Jones & Joseph S. Exell — public domain. Text from a community e-Sword module.

2 Chronicles, in the Historical, opens this verse with 11 words (9 distinct Hebrew lemmas). Its most distinctive word is shêsh (“six”). A historical commentator’s framing appears above. Read the whole chapter for the surrounding context.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “six” (shêsh) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does 2 Chronicles 27:1, which shares this passage’s theme, read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “year” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. «הָיָ֣ה» is a Qal Perfect verb. How does that grammatical form shape the action described?
  6. Compare how Trapp's Complete Commentary and Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
