Hebrew & Septuagint length

In English translation the verse runs 10 words from the Hebrew and 10 from the Septuagint (LXX English) — the same length.

A rough comparison of the two English renderings, which tokenize alike — not a word-level alignment.

Word counts can differ between the Hebrew and the Greek without any difference in meaning — e.g. the Hebrew direct-object marker אֵת has no separate Greek word, and Greek often adds the article ὁ.

In the original languages it is 5 Hebrew tokens and 8 Greek tokens — but the two are counted differently (Hebrew bundles its prefixes and suffixes into one token; the Greek is in lemma form), so that isn’t a like-for-like length.

Commentary

Notes on 1 Chronicles 24:22 from classic Christian and Jewish commentators (each source and its license shown beneath its notes). The classic Christian expositions comment on the surrounding passage and are grouped to its opening verse, so a note may address several verses; the Jewish commentaries on the Tanakh (Rashi and others) are per-verse, so they appear only where the commentator wrote on this verse.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(22) Of the Izharites.—For the Izharites. The Gentilic form of this designation indicates that Shubael, Rehabiah, and others of these proper names, are likewise names of houses or clans.

Shelomoth is mentioned in 1Ch_23:18, but not the chief, “Jahath.”

The Pulpit Commentary

Jahath. Here follows in order after the Amramites, Jahath, a descendant from Izhar, Kohath"s second son, (1Ch_23:12, 1Ch_23:18) through Shelomoth (otherwise Shelemith). This Jahath furnishes for us the third name of this series of "other sons of Levi." And Keil plausibly argues, from the absence of these three names from the list of 1Ch_23:6, 1Ch_23:23, that, while that list is occupied with fathers" houses, this list is occupied with the official classes of the Levites who were to be engaged in the way already stated.

Discussion questions

  1. What does “Izharites” (Yitshârîy) contribute to the verse as a whole?
  2. How does Numbers 3:27, which shares the word «Izharites», read alongside this verse?
  3. What does the repetition of “Shelomoth” (2× in this one verse) do in this verse?
  4. These translations render this verse differently; the difference is in the English rendering, not the original. What questions does that raise?
  5. Compare how Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers and The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges read this verse. Where do they agree or differ?
